Soooo I was waaay to ambitious on Saturday because despite having a million things to do this week - I still got it in my head that I wanted to try to make Corilynn a dress. Now I am not great with the sewing machine but I know how to use it and have made a couple of things with it. Thanks to my Mom who always let me play with hers growing up even though hers was sort of a piece of junk because it broke all the time but it did teach me what to do with a sewing machine that starts to whack out on you - but I digress..
So I picked out a cute pattern and some cute fabric and some cute ribbon for the pattern and yesterday I set out to git-r-done. I did everything right by way of the instructions. I measured my specimen (Corilynn) and checked the size that would fit her and she was between a 3 and 4. No surprise she fits these sizes now in normal clothes. So I decided to go with the 4 because then she could wear it longer. I cut out the pieces and sewed them together. Done.
I go to put it on her and WAHLAH! Its huge. Not just a bit too big because I made it a size bigger but we are talking like - I might be able to fit into it huge. JK no really this one might fit her until she like goes to college.

I don't know why I thought I could do this - Ive tried working from a pattern before and what I got was some HUGE Capri pants for myself that apart from being able to fit two of me in them and the fact that they were way too see through that they would even be considered inappropriate for a honeymoon- were pretty cute.
Can anyone tell me the secret to getting a pattern to fit when you measure right and all? I'm calling you out Megan -- I know you are the queen of sewing!
Ohh and for those of you who have been following my blog - my food storage shelves came and I love them!

One last photo -here is a cute one of Lyman trying to fill more than his father's shoes.

Ok, she will definitely fit that in a year. It's not that huge. Just a little height and she'll fit. And a shirt underneath.
The secret to patterns fitting is measuring your kid and looking at the size measurements for each size. I always err on the side of bigger.
You've got next year's Easter dress ready!
I totally did look at the size measurements for each size -
Haha, man I hope I'm not the Megan your referring to, or I better have some serious wisdom to put here.
I have to say I use the sizes on the back as a gauge, but they are often to big I think (course like Jacki said, best to err on the side of bigger, at least then it will someday fit her).
I like to have an article of clothing that fits similarly to what I want to make on hand to check the pattern or already cut pieces against if not the "specimen" itself (keeping the 5/8 seam allowance in mind). Keep checking as you go along.
Since I usually sew when the specimen is asleep, the article of clothing works well enough most of the time. (oh and make sure its not knit or something else that stretches to fit, unless thats what your making too). I've had to make adjustments on pretty much EVERYTHING I've made and have done so in just about every stage of the process.
Oh and look at the finished garment length that most patterns have on the back of the envelope, that can help sometimes before you start.
Welp, not too secretive, but I hope that helps some.
Love the fabric btw.
I'm impressed! That dress is darling and with a matching purse of course! You rock---SUPER TALENTED WOMAN!
I think it turned out really cute. She will be able to were that next year for sure. Love the purse to go with it.
I love the pattern and colors... too bad it doesn't fit corilynn yet. who would fit a dress that size with a mother who loves that dress... just thinking. haha... you're ambitious. I have no talent in sewing.
Way to go KaraLynne! I have missed a lot the last couple weeks! You have posted a lot during the time I "withdrew" from the blogging world...I'm sure you understand...the whole apartment thing is extra busy this time of year and Old Mill is STILL complaining! Do they ever stop?
